ANTIQUE WELSH LONGCASE CLOCKS .
FOR BOTH.THE
MODERN AND TRADITIONAL HOME

The longcase clock had first been introduced into the homes of the wealthiest, with both movement and case made in London or one of the border towns, and its spread into rural communities was one of the most dramatic craft developments of the 18th century, with makers appearing in every locality. Clocks had been known since the 14th century and a small number of often inventive clockmakers were working by the late 17th century. Some of these might have been to an extent self-taught, a number being blacksmiths, whilst others were trained in England.

8-day longcase clock with square brass dial and silvered calendar indicator and chapter ring and cast rococo corner spandrels by David Rowland of Aberystwyth, circa 1780.

There appear to have been two clockmakers in Aberystwyth called David Rowland, probably father and son. One with this name advertised his premises in Pier Street in 1816 and appeared in trade directories of 1822 and 1836.

Harley and Son of Shrewsbury

30-hour longcase clock with painted dial by Harley and Son of Shrewsbury

30-hour longcase clock with painted dial by Harley and Son of Shrewsbury.

The figured-oak case with plum cross-banding is especially fine and well constructed. The great interest of this clock is the paper label inside the door giving the name and location of the craftsman and the precise date of manufacture:

"Thomas Lewis, Cabinet Maker
Llandinan, Montgomery Shour
June 24, Year 1788"

8-day longcase clock with painted arch dial with a rural scene.

8-day longcase clock with repeater mechanism, square brass dial and cast corner spandrels, circa 1760

8-day longcase clock with repeater mechanism, square brass dial and cast corner spandrels, circa 1760.

Clocks by Richard Watkin have been recorded with the place-names of Llywel, Merthyr Tydfil, Trecastle and Brecon, one having the address "Ceven y Gweision, Llywell, Brecknockshire. Amongst his customers was William Wiliams, Pantcelyn. He normally produced the simpler 30-hour movements, although his probate inventory of 1782 mentioned three clocks in his shop at values of 5 pounds, 2 pounds and 1 pound - the first presumably having an 8-day movement.

30-hour longcase clock with painted arch dial featuring a sailing ship and coastal scenes, lacking a maker's signature, but probably from Carmarthenshire, circa 1840.

The oak case is embellished with extremely individual motifs inlaid in holly and both golden and bog oak, which are nevertheless recognizable as part of a distinctive tradition of decoration found in an area stretching from south Pembrokeshire to the Vale of Glamorgan and up the Towy valley.
