ANTIQUE WELSH TOWN FURNITURE
FOR BOTH.THE MODERN AND TRADITIONAL HOME

The way of life and furnishing requirements of the middle class in and around towns such as Carmarthen were closely connected to those of their contemporaries in Bristol and other large towns and cities, where taste was becoming governed by a desire for comfort as much as refinement. A further consideration might have been the growing appeal to this class of nonconformity and its associated taste which favoured durability and restrained ornament – which were such prominent features of the oak furniture from the area – and this contributed to the distinct preferences for certain styles in the locality.

Welsh mahogany bookcase, the top section with a bold cornice above a pair of glazed doors with an arched design favoured in the region, enclosing adjustable shelves.
The base section has a fitted secretaire drawer with inset leather writing surface, over a pair of arched doors raised on turned legs.
A hidden drawer (in the form of a church offertory box) bears the pencil
inscription of the maker:

Carmarthen Febry 1836
Made by J Gomer Davies
Cabinet Maker
at Wm Isaac Davies "

The firm of Isaac Davies was a prolific furniture producer trading from Priory Street and King Street in Carmarthen from 1815.
Four other pieces by this firm see "Welsh Furniture 1250-1950" Chapter Six, where Fig 1174 shows a similar but less presitgious version in deal which originally had simulated mahogany graining.

Mahogany bureau cabinet of rich colour, the upper section with a cornice incorporating broken-dentil moulding over a pair of fine serpentine-shaped panelled doors enclosing adjustable shelves and with candle slides, the lower section with a fall enclosing a fitted interior (with secret drawers) over four graduated cock-beaded drawers, raised on shaped bracket feet, circa 1760 50" wide, 22.5" deep, 92.5" high
