ANTIQUE WELSH MINIATURE ITEMS .
FOR BOTH.THE
MODERN AND TRADITIONAL HOME

The miniature items of furniture are often described as either a plaything, traveller's sample, or an apprentice-piece. We are rarely able to distinguish between these quite different descriptions. An apprentice-piece would be expected to be an article which was typical of the firm's products and involved the use of all of the appropriate skills, and tradition dictated that it should be in a scaled-down form.

The chiffonier would be a typical product of an urban cabinet-maker cum furniture retailer in the late nineteenth century, and this example involves a variety of techniques including those of turning, inlaying and veneering. It is lined and backed with bright blue paper and bears the inscription of Albert May of Bush St, Pembroke Dock. The inlaid decoration and carved beadwork is typical of work from that location, which had a thriving woodworking sector in the 19th century.

Miniature chests of drawers are often found in Wales, and in Ceredigion for example are often placed on the dresser. Some of these may also be apprentice-pieces, others made as simple gifts.
