Antique Welsh chair by T. Milward

Unusual Welsh oak chair, the panelled back enclosed by a shaped surround above an elm seat with shaped arms, over a panelled front flanked by broad supports with split-turned embellishments, carved on the reverse "T + M maker 1880" and impressed "T. Milward".

This chair was acquired in Pendoylan, Vale of Glamorgan, where the Milward family had practiced their woodworking craft for generations.

A Thomas Milward appears in trade directories of 1880 as a joiner and carpenter in Llanillterne, and the name also appears in the 1881 census in Llanillterne (as a wheelwright) and Oystermouth (as a boatbuilder).
