30-hour longcase clock with painted arch dial featuring a sailing ship and coastal scenes, lacking a maker's signature, but probably from Carmarthenshire, c1840.

The oak case is embellished with extremely individual motifs inlaid in holly and both golden and bog oak, which are nevertheless recognizable as part of a distinctive tradition of decoration found in an area stretching from south Pembrokeshire to the Vale of Glamorgan and up the Towy valley.

The hood has a swan-neck pediment with central brass finial and rosettes, and plain turned pillars over a shaped trunk door above a base raised on a plinth.

84" high, 18.5" wide
213 cms high, 47 cms wide

This piece is featured in: "Welsh Furniture 1250-1950"
