The fashion for portraiture was introduced into Wales in the Tudor period, and paintings adorned the walls of gentry homes in subsequent periods. By the nineteenth century, a number of artisan artists were catering to the needs of the middle classes, alongside their other activities such as sign-writing... The landscape of Wales attracted both local and outside artists from the eighteenth century through to the present. Besides wild mountainous tracts and picturesque buildings, the domineering Edwardian castles were a favourite theme.
