Important documentary mahogany chest of drawers with boldly turned corner pillars raised on turned feet, of a style favoured in west Wales, bearing the pencilled maker's inscription:

"James Richards - Cartlett - April 1829"

Cartlett is a "suburb" of Haverfordwest and was the location of Joseph Mathias, the leading cabinet-maker of the town in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, about whom there is much documentary evidence but hitherto no known pieces of furniture.
