Robert Thomas of Caernarfon

8-day longcase clock with brass arch dial with painted moon movement and cast rococo corner spandrels by Robert Thomas of Caernarfon, c1770

Robert Thomas was recorded in Bangor Street in 1778, and was of sufficient status to be paid to wind and regulate the town clock between 1813 and 1827, the year he died. He was the son of Morris, another maker of fine clocks, and examples have been recorded which bear both of their names.

The exceptional figured mahogany case is almost identical to those housing the clocks of the north-west of England, but differs in using solid timber for the door and base panel. The bold and decorative hood has a swan neck pediment with brass finials and rosettes and fluted pillars over a shaped trunk door flanked by fluted quarter columns surmounted by a cross-banded frieze with inlaid motif, over a base with a bold waist moulding and a shaped panel raised on bracket feet.

This grand clock was apparently made for a sea captain who retired to a large town house in Caernarfon.

79.5" high, 21" wide
202 cms high, 53 cms wide

This piece is featured in: "Welsh Furniture 1250-1950"
