David Rowland of Aberystwyth

8-day longcase clock with square brass dial and silvered calendar indicator and chapter ring and cast rococo corner spandrels by David Rowland of Aberystwyth, c1780.

There appear to have been two clockmakers in Aberystwyth called David Rowland, probably father and son. One with this name advertised his premises in Pier Street in 1816 and appeared in trade directories of 1822 and 1836. The exceptionally fine oak case has a square hood with a bold cornice with broken dentil embellishments above a blind fretwork frieze and turned pillars, over a trunk with Greek-key and fluted decoration above a shaped door flanked by fluted columns over a plain base raised on a (later plinth). (The slight overlap of the dial by the hood door possibly indicating a marriage, but is within the tolerance often found in 18th century Welsh clocks, when the casemaker was often located at a distance from the clockmaker).
