Rare provenanced Welsh oak chest of drawers from Pwll y Wrach, Colwinston, Vale of Glamorgan. The chest is embellished with applied geometric mouldings and incised decoration, and unusual corner motifs bearing the date "1717", with panelled ends and raised on feet.

This elaborate chest of drawers is made from distinctly native timber and comes from Pwll y wrach near Colwinston in the Vale of Glamorgan. In addition to the conventional ornament it has a variety of more individual features including lightly scratched carving and the date "1717" spread between idiosyncratic corner motifs. The iron loop handles are original, and the insides of the drawers retain traces of lining paper.

This rare and exceptional example was considered of sufficient importance in the first half of the 20th century to be included in the Exhibitiobn of Welsh Furniture at the National Museum of Wales in 1936 and illustrated in both "The Dictionary of English Furniture" (Ralph Edwards) and "Welsh Furniture" (Twiston-Davies & Lloyd-Johnes).
