Half-length portrait of Ithel Felyn, A Gentleman of Corsygedol, in fine carved gilt gesso frame, oil on canvas, c1660. Exhibited in the National Museum of Wales loan Exhibition "Portraits from Welsh Houses" in 1948 (No 7 in the Catalogue), when it was owned by General John Vaughan of Nannau and given the date of c1620. It remained in the family until earlier this year. The title is given on an early 20th century label on the reverse which says "originally labelled 'Ithel Felyn: A Gentleman of Corsygedol'". A rough inscription on the stretcher says "Ithel Felyn of Corsygedol, an Irishman", but this is probably due to a misreading of "Gentleman". The more recent plaque on the front gives the name of "William Vaughan, son-in-law of Gruffydd Nanney of Nannau, ob. 1669 aged 37". William had married Anne Nanney, and was himself the son of Richard Vaughan (well-known in London as the abnormally stout member of Parliament for Meirioneth), and Anne Owen (Daughter of Sir John Owen of Clenennau a leading Royalist commander). He died in 1669 at the age of 37. |
