carmarthen-coffer

Welsh oak press cupboard of the type known as a "Carmarthen Coffer" from Cardiganshire, circa 1780.
The top frieze has an alternating decoration of reeding and inlaid diamonds. The sides of the top section are shaped to simulate quarter-columns.
The two top doors are each decorated with two gothic fielded and raised panels above a row of three false-fronted drawers.
The base has two rows of deep drawers, the whole raised on a shaped plinth ending at shaped bracket feet.

Please note: this piece is totally original in form. Most superficially similar pieces on the market have been replicated by fixing the lid and cutting the front panel of a large coffer.
