desk was often owned by yeoman farmers in the 17th century, and their rapid spread meant that by the last quarter of the 18th century they had become common and appeared in many forms, often with quite individual proportions. The simple table-top versions continued to be produced, although without carving. Many early examples were found in Montgomeryshire, an elegant desk of c1730 from the border district, with an elaborate interior and having inlaid embellishments, being mounted on a stand. The one-piece bureau became the more usual form, with similar features to contemporary chests of drawers..."
